Baby acne

July 16th, 2009

Baby acne is surprisingly very common. If your child has acne, or you are an infant that knows how to work a computer and read, this article is for you.

Scientists are split on what causes baby acne [does this surprise anyone?]. But one possible speculation is the influx of different hormones a baby is presented with in his or her first few months.

The good news is that baby acne is very rarely severe. Your child’s health should not be effected, acne in infants is purely aesthetical.

The extent of acne an infant gets is usually a few small red bumps on his or her face and back, nothing to serious.

Do’s and Don’ts:

Do:

  • Speak with you child’s pediatrician about baby acne at your next visit.
  • Set up a special visit with your child’s pediatrician about you infants acne problem if you believe that it is worse than mild.
  • Keep your child’s face clean. Wash your child’s face once or twice daily. Do not go overboard though, your child will not appreciate dry skin!

Don’t

  • Try to treat you infant’s pimples with normal acne treatments. Acne treatments are meant for teenager’s and adults, not babies. They also often have side effects that can be magnified when an infant takes the treatment.
  • Touch the acne anymore than you need to. This could obviously be uncomfortable for your child, and the oils in your fingers could make the situation worse.
  • Try any unnatural ways to treat or prevent your infant from getting acne. Your baby is getting acne because of hormones. You child is not a testing dummy, it’s a human being! At this time, you don’t know what your child may be allergic to, trying out different ways to prevent or treat your babies acne is not a smart move.
